Shabby chic décor is a technique of decorating that balances well-designed and beautiful objects with old, worn out and sometimes tattered items. Top on this list is shabby chic furniture. Shabby chic decorating includes soft delicate colors with creamy white being predominate in many simply shabby chic schemes. Rachel Ashwell is credited for giving the style its name.

Shabby chic’s early beginnings included plenty of white painted objects which are still used today. Wooden furniture found at garage sales, flea markets, and even in the attic can be spray painted white and become shabby chic furniture. Since shabby chic decorating is also about distressed surfaces, add character to furniture by roughing it up a little--lightly sand chic Decor the corners for a worn look.

Remember, if you want shabby chic furniture, don’t look for bright bold colors or matching sets. It would be more appropriate to mix and match upholstery patterns and add florals and stripes in pillows and other accessories. As an example, you might have visions of cuddling in your grandmother’s soft, comfortable slip-covered furniture.

Shabby chic has expanded to include vintage fabrics and all types of imperfect, once elegant accessories. A ruffled, rumpled elegance is characteristic of simply shabby chic. Antique collectibles are a nice addition to this decorating style. You might also want to include one of the many wonderful, ornate antique side tables as part of your shabby chic furniture collection.

In mixing patterns in the shabby chic decorating style keep the background color the same creamy white with at least one color recurring in every pattern. A tip for giving a harsh white fabric or lace a vintage-look is to stain it with tea. Use three or four tea bags in a pot of hot water testing it every 10 minutes until it has the desired aged look. Pretest a piece of fabric to get the right tint.

As you can see, shabby chic décor is an excellent choice if you are on a tight decorating budget. Combine creativity and time to browse secondhand stores, garage sales and flea markets, and you will have a comfortable, eclectic collection of shabby chic décor and shabby chic furniture.

The price was right but the construction uses rather flimsy material. I actually wanted working birdhouses and these didn’t look like they would last a whole season outside. My wife coated them with marine varnish and they became somewhat more sturdy but I think these are better as decorations than birdhouses.

  2. Kuhn Says:

The birdhouse is very cute, but the quality isn’t very good. I have it out in my backyard and don’t expect it to last too long out in the elements. The price was very reasonable.

  3. Flann Says:

I thought this bird house was very lovely, though it’s pretty small for all the details. I gave it as a gift to my mother-in-law, but my father-in-law painted it! She thought it was too white. Either way, it’s very cute.

  4. Ellsworth Says:

I was pleased with this birdhouse until after the first rain when I went to check on it. The gingerbread details on this birdhouse are made out of CARDBOARD and started to crumble when I touched them.

I had read the other review about poor wood quality, and did not expect great things for $11- but cardboard? seriously?

This should be listed as a decoration only! not for outdoor use!!

I too, read the reviews of this product albeit not from this seller and still decided to purchase it through Amazon. Here is a helpful hint: when purchasing furniture of this quality (lower end) it pays to take a little extra time and care with assembly. While the bolts that secure the legs look adequate – I augmented the assembly with gorilla glue. To date I have been using this stool for three weeks with absolutely no sign of trouble, it is extremely functinal, the perfect height, and blends in very nicely with its neutral colors. I think its a great value!

  6. Newsom Says:

The stool looked beautiful after we put it together. However, not much later my parents-in-law came to visit. My mother-in-law sat in the stool to put on some makeup in my vanity, and it broke! She is only about 110 pounds! Thankfully she didn’t get hurt. We tried fixing it but the other legs broke twice in subsequent times. Threw it out and had to buy another stool. Don’t buy it, badly made.

  7. Duvall Says:

This was a purchase for my 5yr old grand daughter. Now she only weighs 41 lbs. It broke on her the second time she sat on it. Unless your husband does repairs do not bother to buy this. If the chair should happen to break again there is no fixing. Save your money and get something that cost a little more. You will be further ahead in the long while.

  8. Goode Says:

this merchandise is shotty workmanship dont waste your money the gorilla glue is more expensive with shipping then it worth…
